WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED?

As parents it is crucial for us to constantly be observant and sensitive of our child’s behaviors and understand what they are going through inside and outside the family setting. Should our child experience bullying then we need to be pro-active in helping them going through such experiences by:

  • LISTENING TO OUR CHILDREN AND SHOW THEM OUR CONCERN AND SUPPORT. Remain calm, listen in loving manner and support our child’s feeling. Remind your child that he or she is not to blame for being bullied.

  • LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT THE SITUATION. Ask your child to describe how and when the bullying occurs, who’s involved, and if other children or adults have witnessed the bullying incidents. Has your child done something to stop the bullying?

  • GIVE CONSIDERED ADVICE ON HOW TO RESPOND TO THE BULLYING. Do not encourage retaliation as this will most likely increase the bullying act. Instead, ask your child to maintain his or her composure. Example: “I want you to stop now” and then calmly walk away.
WORK WITH YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BY ESTABLISHING A PLAN FOR DEALING WITH THE CURRENT SITUATION AND FUTURE BULLYING INCIDENTS. Do not contact the bully student’s parents yourself. You might also want to encourage school officials to address bullying as part of the curriculum.

  • BOOST YOUR CHILD’S SELF-CONFIIDENCE. Encourage him or her to take activities that can raise self-esteem such as sports, music or art and to build friendships with other children- to improve his or her social skills.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP such as professional counseling when your child’s anxiety becomes overwhelming.
